Abstract

1,038,359. Straightening sheets. DREVER CO. Sept. 18, 1964 [May 27,1964], No. 38303/64. Heading B3E. A plate or sheet 11 from a heat treatment furnace is straightened and quenched simultaneously between rollers 45 and 39 of a machine 10. The lower rollers 39 are mounted on fixed beams 14 of the machine while the upper rollers 45 are mounted on a platen 20 which is vertically adjustable by levers 29 whose inner ends are connected to a sleeve 34, hydraulically operated by a piston-rod 37. The pivot points 30 of the levers are positioned on brackets rigidly attached to the machine frame. Quench pipes 66 and 79 (Fig. 2, not shown), having nozzles 67 and 80 are positioned between the rollers, the pipes being supplied with quenching fluid from mains 71 by pumps 70. An hydraulic motor 49 drives the opposed rollers 45 and 39 in opposite directions through a chain drive. When a workpiece 11 is received on the rollers 24 of the machine it is moved under the rollers 45 which are then lowered and pressed against the workpiece. During quenching the workpiece is reciprocated longitudinally by the rollers to give complete quenching. Limit switches 108, 112, 115 and 122 are used for manual or automatic control of the machine. In an alternative from the straightening rollers are supported and driven by backing rollers and are supplied with cooling fluid in their hollow interiors. The pressure and volume of fluid supplied to the underside and upperside of the workpiece can be varied, and different sized nozzles may be used.
