Abstract

An additive for lubricating compositions comprises a copolymer, having a molecular weight of at least 1000 of N2,N2-diallyl melamine with one or more oil-solubilizing monomers being nitrogen-free ethylenically unsaturated compounds containing an alkyl group having at least 8 carbon atoms and optionally a further copolymerizable monomer, e.g. vinyl acetate. The oil-solubilizing, monomer is preferably an alkyl ester of an unsaturated acid. A lubricating composition comprises a mineral lubricating oil and from 0.1 to 10% by weight of the composition of the additive. The additives act as cold sludge dispersants and viscosity index improvers.ALSO:A copolymer, having a molecular weight of at least 1000 of N2,N2-diallyl melamine with one or more oil-solubilizing monomers being nitrogen-free ethylenically unsaturated compounds containing an alkyl group having at least 8 carbon atoms and optionally a further copolymerizable monomer. The oil-solubilizing monomer is preferably an alkyl ester of an unsaturated acid. Polymerization is carried out in a conventional manner using free radical catalysts using bulk or solution polymerization. Examples relate to copolymers of diallyl melamine with vinyl acetate and stearyl methacrylate, vinyl acetate and cetyl methacrylate, vinyl acetate and lauryl methacrylate, n-butyl methacrylate and cetyl/stearyl methacrylate mixture, vinyl acetate and cetyl/stearyl methacrylate mixture. The copolymers are used as lubricating oil additive.
