Abstract
A laminate in the form of webs microtapes or threads comprises:- a layer of plastics film consisting of or containing a thermoplastic polymer, e.g. a propylene homopolymer, containing at least 80% by weight of interpolymerized propylene; a second plastics film or coating over the first layer, and interposed between the two a lustrous and specular non-self-supporting metallic layer, preferably of aluminium. The plastics layers are preferably transparent. To make the laminate the polymer film is coated with metal by vaporizing and a second plastics film applied thereto as a coating, or two metal-coated films are laminated together. Prior to coating the film may be oxidized by methane flame or electrostatic treatment and coated with a resin adhesive e.g. a blend of synthetic rubber with a vinyl chloride copolymer. The web so formed may be cut into yarns or threads which can be woven or knitted or incorporated in other fabrics.
