Abstract

Fibres made from homopolymers of polyacrylonitrile or copolymers containing at least 40% by weight of acrylonitrile with one or more copolymerisable monomers, e.g. methylacrylate, vinyl acetate, methyl methacrylate, vinylidene chloride, methyllyl sulphonic acid or itaconic acid, are rendered antistatic by treating them with an aqueous alkaline solution containing a cation-active quaternary ammonium halide having the formula <FORM:1037452/D1-D2/1> in which R1 is an alkyl group containing at least 8 carbon atoms, R2 and R3 are alkyl groups, R4 is an alkyl or aryl group and Y is a halide anion. The treating solution may contain as an alkali ammonium hydroxide or an alkali metal compound, e.g. sodium or potassium hydroxide, carbonate phosphate or meta silicate, and as the quaternary ammonium halide cetyl trimethyl ammonium bromide or lauryl dimethyl benzyl ammonium chloride. The fibres may be in the form of yarns, tows or woven or knitted fabrics.
