Abstract
A liquid mixture of three components A, B and C, in which component C constitutes a major portion of the mixture, is fractionated by introducing the mixture into the head of a distillation column which is heated above the boiling point of component A, whereby a vapour mixture enriched in A passes out of the head of the column, and a mixture of B and C flows out of the lower part of the column. The mixture, introduced into the head of the column, acts as an entraining agent. In an example, a mixture of methyl acrylate (7.3%), methanol (15%) and water (77.7%), at a temperature of 54 DEG C., is sprayed into the top of a column which is 9.5 metres high, the lower 4 metres of the column being heated by a jacket to a temperature above the boiling point of methyl acrylate. The column has no plates or packing. The vapour passing out of the head of the column is condensed, yielding a distillate containing 78.5% of methyl acrylate, comprising 99.6% of the methyl acrylate in the feed. Aqueous methanol, comprising 94% of the methanol in the feed, is withdrawn from the base of the column. Another example relates to the separation of ethyl acetate from a mixture of the ester, methanol and water. The separation of cyclohexane from a mixture of cyclohexane, benzene and aniline, is mentioned.
