A welting element to interconnect edge surfaces of aligned panels 16 of fibrous material in the form of an elongated strip coextensive with the said edge surfaces and of uniform crosssection comprises a narrow shank 20, an enlarged welt 26 and at least one pair of spaced parallel flanges 22, 24 as shown, spaced therefrom, to penetrate the opposed and abutting edge surfaces. Instead of being circular in outer cross-section the well may be arcuate or of an upward-curved crescent-shape.
