An electric motor 1 for use in mines has a housing which is subdivided to form at the side of a space which houses the motor stator 2 three compartments of which the middle one 6 is arranged to house motor control gear while the other two 7, 7<SP>1</SP> on opposite sides on the compartment 6 are adapted to house terminal connections. The compartments are flameproof, and those 7, 7<SP>1</SP> may accommodate a winch speed control device, electrical instruments, and electrical supply leads for which closable apertures 8, 8<SP>1</SP> are provided. Inlet and outlet ducts 4, 5 are provided for motor cooling air.
