Abstract

1,034,986. Radiator caps. DOLE VALVE CO. Sept. 1, 1964 [Sept. 12, 1963], No. 35771/64. Heading B8T. A radiator cap 10 for closuring a conduit 11 comprises a cover plate 20 having a depending stud 21 and a valve bonnet 22 relatively slidably mounted on the stud. A plunger 32 having a head 33 is disposed through a bore in the stud and has a button 35 at its upper end, a spring 36 biasing the plunger to its normal position shown in Fig. 1. A resilient annulus 46 is secured to the base plate 44 of the bonnet and defines a port 48 and a valve head 52 seats against the annulus to close the port 48 to fluid flow from the portion 12 of the conduit, a leaf spring 57 abutting an extension 53 of this valve head urging the valve head 52 to its port closed position. In this normal position, fluid pressure builds up in the portion 12 but no fluid escapes. To remove the cap 10, first the button 35 is depressed to lower the plunger so that its head 33 engages and depresses the extension 53 so that the valve head 52 opens the port 48 and fluid escapes from the portion 12 to the atmosphere via apertures 51 in the bonnet 22, a chamber 17 and a vent tube 16. The plunger is retained in this lower position by a spring lock 39 which permits downward movement of the plunger but prevents it from returning by an end part 41 engaging rings 43 on the plunger head. When the cap is rotated and completely removed from the conduit 11 a spring 23 biases the bonnet 22 relatively away from the plate 20 and the top surface 63 of the bonnet engages a pair of ears 62 extending upwardly from the end 41 to force the end 41 away from the rings 43 and thus automatically return the plunger and the button to the normal position of Fig. 1.
