Abstract
Tetrafluoroethylene is made by heating a mixture of CF2Cl.CF2Cl with hydrogen at 350-450 DEG C. in the presence of a copper oxide of chromium-alkaline earth metal oxide catalyst which has been prepared by calcining the precipitate obtained by reacting in solution an ammonium chromate with a copper salt and an alkaline earth metal salt. It is preferred to subject the catalyst to heat treatment in the presence of hydrogen before use. The proportion of hydrogen used is generally 0.75 to 1.25 mols per mol CF2Cl.CF2Cl. Examples relate to the use of a copper-chromium oxide barium oxide catalyst.
