Abstract
Quaternary ammonium compounds are prepared by reacting (A) an addition product of 1 mole of a primary alkyl or alkenyl amine of 12-22 carbon atoms and 1-2 moles of styrene oxide followed by 10-30 moles of ethylene oxide with (B) 1 mole of a reactive ester of a strong acid and a C1-4 alkanol. Up to 2 moles of propylene oxide may also be present in the addition product. The reaction may take place at 60-120 DEG C. Amines specified are dodecylamine, tetradecylamine, hexadecylamine, docosylamine, octadecenylamine, octodecylamine, stearylamine or olcylamine. Esters specified are dimethyl sulphate, diethyl sulphate, methyl or ethyl chlorides, bromides or iodides and the methyl esters of benzene, toluene, halobenzene and nitrobenzene sulphonic acids.ALSO:Quarternary ammonium compounds suitable as dyeing auxiliaries are prepared by the addition of 1-2 moles of styrene oxide followed by 0-2 moles of propylene oxide and then 10-30 moles of ethylene oxide to 1 mole of a C12-22 alkyl or alkenyl primary amine and treating the product with an ester of a C1-4 alkanol and a strong acid 0.5-2% of the compound may be added to an acid bath of an anionic dyestuff, e.g. a sulphonated dioxazine dyestuff, used in the dyeing of wool to produce a deepening and levelling of shade. In example (1) a compound produced by adding styrene oxide, propylene oxide and ethylene oxide to oleylamine and treating the product with dimethyl sulphate is added to wool dyeing solution comprising Sirius Light Blue FF2GL (the sodium salt of 2, 6-bis-phenylamino-9, 10-dichlorotriphenodioxazine-di-sulphonic acid) in ag. acetic acid. In other examples the oleylamine is replaced by stearyl amine and the dye is Remstral (Registered Trade Mark) Blue FF2GL(2), the oleylamine is replaced by dodecylamine (3) and the propylene oxide is omitted (4).
