Abstract
<PICT:1033953/C6-C7/1> A continuously moving metal strip is electroplated from an electrolyte containing a metal and also electrophoretically coated by metal particles held in suspension in the electrolyte and deposited with the plating metal. The two metals may be the same or different and the suspended metal if of 1 to 10 m size. Cu, Fe, Zn, Al and Ni are specified. Preferably the evolution of hydrogen is supressed by using Redox type compounds e.g. iodine/iodide, fericyanide/feorocyanide or quinone/hydroquinone, or by adding reducible organic compounds e.g. nitrobenzene, acetaldehyde, and glyoxylic acid. The deposited layer may be compressed, heated to form a coherent coating or may be stripped off, when a sulphided copper strips is used as substrate. A metal strip 12 passes between anodes 13 in a suspension of e.g. iron powder in FeSO4 solution containing also KCl, and (NH4)2SO4, kept agitated, and the coated strip passes under a roll 14 and a second pair of anodes 15. After compressing the coating by a roller and heating below the sintering temperature the strip passes through a second coating bath, and is compressed and heated again.
