Abstract
1,033,322. Laminates. PITTSBURGH PLATE GLASS CO. Feb. 28, 1964 [March 1, 1963; April 24, 1963; Aug. 2, 1963], No. 8320/64. Heading B5N. Laminates of sheet glass, or of rigid transparent synthetic resin such as acrylic, polycarbonate or polyester resin, having interlayers, e.g. of polyvinyl butyral, contain at least one other component comprising a thermosetting resin reinforced with glass fibre, the resin being e.g. a condensate of formaldehyde with phenol, resorcinol, urea, dicyandiamide, or melamine, or a mixture thereof, and being flexible when uncured and rigid when cured and preferably having a thermal expansion coefficient when cured within the range 0À5-8À0 microinches/ inch/‹ F. The laminates may be used to make road vehicle and aircraft windscreen panels and may contain conductive coatings or grids for heating, connected by leads and bus-bars to terminal blocks; the fibrous components may be used as tapes to enclose and insulate the leads, but may also comprise (i) inserts set in the interlayers close to the edges of the panel to prevent delamination or edge chipping due to differential contraction of layers at low temperatures, (ii) stiffening inserts or frames in the edges of the interlayers, or (iii) protective cover strips for the edges of the panel. In Fig. 2 (not shown) glass plies 5, 7 have between them an interlayer 9 of plies of polyvinyl butyral consolidated by heat and pressure, the interlayer having a frame-like insert 11 of the thermosetting resin-impregnated glass fibre. The ply 5 has a conducting coating electrically connected by a bus-bar 12 and a lead 13 to a terminal block 1, the lead 13 being enclosed between tapes 15 of the resin-impregnated glass fibre, themselves secured to the ply 5 by a rubber latex, " Thiokol " (Trade Mark) or other elastic bonding medium 17. The interlayer 9 extends beyond the plies 5, 7 and is used to secure the panel in its mounting. Constructions showing similar electrical connections and insulating features are described in which (a) the glass ply 7 is extended with the interlayer and (b) the other glass ply is extended, without the interlayer, and comprises several plies bonded together with interlayer material, the terminal block being supported on the extended layers. In Fig. 7 (not shown), inserts 18 of the resinimpregnated glass fibres located in the interlayer 9 near the edge of one or both glass plies 5, 7, are treated with parting material 19 such as regenerated cellulose, a polyester or a polyfluorocarbon to weaken the bond and prevent delamination or chipping, elastic bonding medium 17, which may extend over the edges of the plies, being used to secure the inserts and the parting material. In Fig. 13 (not shown) thermosetting resin-impregnated glass fibres 27 may be used to seal the edges of a stepped or plain laminated panel. The material 27 may extend marginally over the face of the panel and may be secured by bonding medium 17.
