Abstract
1,033,243. Photo-conductive materials. GENERAL ANILINE & FILM CORPORATION. Feb. 26, 1964 [March 13, 1963], No. 7972/64. Heading H1K. Photo-conductors normally sensitive only to U.V. light may be sensitized to visible light by heating an intimate mixture of the photoconductor and an organic dyestuff to a temperature sufficiently high to cause a reaction between the photo-conductor and the dyestuff or a derivative thereof. As described, dry zinc oxide is heated together with a sensitizing dye at such a temperature and for such a time that an oxidation product or residue of the dye reacts with the zinc oxide to form a complex no part of which is water soluble. Various dyestuffs are listed, the preferred heating time and temperature range being given for each. They are:-Rhodamine B Extra, Patent Blue, Rose Bengal, Eosin, Erythrosin, Fluorescein, Malachite Green, Brilliant Green, Auramine, Crystal Violet, Rhodamine, Celliton Fast Pink, Bromophenol Blue, and Bromcresol Green. The quantity used may be in the range 1-10 parts by weight of dyestuff to 1000 parts of photo-conductor. To form an electrophotographic material the treated oxide is dispersed in an aqueous resin emulsion which is coated on to a suitable support and the water evaporated. A suggested support is clay-coated paper. A binder used is an epoxy ester-vinylacetate-crotonic acid copolymer.
