Abstract
1,033,160. Making heat exchangers; shearing; forging; extruding; rolling. OLIN MATHIESON CHEMICAL CORPORATION. Aug. 12, 1963 [Aug. 29, 1962], No. 31806/63. Headings B3A, B3H, B3M, B3P and B3W. [Also in Division F4] A method of making a seamless finned hollow metal sheet structure, e.g. a heat exchanger tube, panel, comprises bonding a pair of metal sheets 1, 2, Fig. 5 (not shown), together having stop weld material 17 therebetween defining fluid passageways, forging the composite between a pair of reciprocating ribbed forging dies 10, 11, Fig. 7 (not shown), the ribs of one die being offset relative to the other, to produce external ribs offset to one another on each side thereof and internal corrugated surfaces 7, 8, the corrugations being off-set relative to each other and to the external ribs of the respective sheet. The formed composite is then expanded, e.g. by inflation, into a heat exchanger panel, Fig. 3. In a first modification, a tear drop crosssectional shaped panel is produced by forging a preferably annealed composite 42 between dies 39, 40, Fig. 9 (not shown), over part of its width, followed by fluid inflation thereof with or without the use of sizing dies 36, 37, Fig. 8 (not shown). In a further modification heat exchangers having single or multiple passageways are produced by passing an appropriate blank form between a pair of toothed swaging rolls 62, 63, Fig. 12 (not shown), which produce the ribs therein. The panels are cut to length by a pair of coacting teeth 68, 69 on the periphery of the rolls. The ribs formed on blanks may be of a constant depth, or be deepest at the mid-point and may extend over the full width thereof. The blanks may be initially formed by rolling, drawing or extruding.
