Abstract
Polyhydroxy amides of formula: <FORM:1032873/C2/1> where R is the hydrocarbon radical of a polymeric fat acid, x is an integer from 2-4 and R1 is a divalent aliphatic hydrocarbon radical having from 1-8 C, are prepared by reacting a dialkanolamine of formula <FORM:1032873/C2/2> where R1 is as defined, with a polymeric fatty acid or an alkyl ester thereof in which the alkyl group has 1-8 C. The fat acids used to prepare the polymeric fat acids may be saturated, ethylenically or acetylenically unsaturated naturally occurring and synthetic monocarboxylic aliphatic acids containing 8-24 C. In the examples the tetrakis-(2-hydroxyethyl) dimeramide of dimerized tall oil fatty acids was prepared by reaction with diethanolamine.ALSO:An organic polyisocyanate or polyisothiocyanate is reacted with a polyhydroxy compound of formula <FORM:1032873/C3/1> where R is the hydrocarbon radical of a polymeric fat acid, x is an integer from 2-4 and R1 is a divalent aliphatic hydrocarbon radical having 1-8C. The polyhydroxy compound may be the condensation product of a dialkanolamine of formula <FORM:1032873/C3/2> where R1 is as defined above with a polymeric fat acid or an alkyl ester thereof in which the alkyl group has 1-8C. The polymeric fat acid is obtained by polymerizing ethylenically unsaturated, acetylenically unsaturate or saturated monocarboxylic aliphatic acids of 8-24C. In Examples 3-6 and 8 a polyhydroxy compound derived from dimerized tall oil fatty acids was reacted with (3) tolylene diisocyanate in the presence of an organic solvent and applied as a coating to tin, steel and glass, (4) the prepolymer derived from tolylene diisocyanate and trimethylol propane. In Example (8) the reaction product of diethanolamine and an esterified polymeric fat acid obtained from tall oil fatty acids was reacted with tolylene diisocyanate in the presence of a "Cellosolve" (Registered Trade Mark) acetate-xylene mixture to prepare a coating.ALSO:A coating composition comprises the reaction product of an organic polyisocyanate or polyisothiocyanate with a polyhydroxy compound of formula <FORM:1032873/B1-B2/1> Where R is the hydrocarbon radical of a polymeric fat acid, x is an integer from 2-4 and R1 is a divalent aliphaxin hydrocarbon radical having 1-8C and a solvent e.g. "Cellosolve" (Registered Trade Mark) acetate and xylene. The coatings may be applied e.g. by brushing or casting to tin, steel or glass.
