Abstract

1,032,845. Photographic printing apparatus. NUARC CO. Aug. 4, 1964 [May 11, 1964], No. 31310/64. Heading G2A. A printer 20 for use in making photographic plates comprises a cabinet 21 with a light source mounted therein; a printing frame 25 including a pair of glass plates 86 and a pair of imperforate resilient blankets 101, each blanke being face-toface with a plate 86; a continuous seal 103 around a peripheral position of each combination of plate and blanket, means for drawing a vacuum between the components of each combination; and means for mounting the frame in the top of the cabinet for pivotal movement about a central axis of the frame to enable either glass plate to face the light source while a vacuum is maintained between the components of the combination nearest the light source. Each plate 86 is carried in a frame assembly 85 which is raised to allow insertion of sensitized material and negatives which are laid on the blanket 101. The assembly is closed and locked by latches 96. A vacuum is drawn between the blanket and plate by actuating a vacuum control switch 106 (or 107 if the other side B of frame 25 is uppermost) which starts a vacuum pump connected to the cavity between the blanket and plate by tubular pintles 83, 84 having vacuum fittings 114 and conduits 116 at their outer ends and T fittings 118 and conduits 119,120 at their insides. Atmospheric pressure forces the blanket 101 against the plate 86. The frame 25 is rotated through 180 degrees about the pintles 83, 84 by releasing latch 142. The latch is locked, vacuum continues to be drawn and the photographic material is exposed while the other loading station (now on top) is unloaded and reloaded. The light source is preferably a xenon lamp. The blanket 101 is preferably a one piece rubber moulding and may be provided on its plate engaging face with a plurality of square, truncated pyramids or protuberances 102.
