Abstract

Curable compositions comprise stoichiometric amounts of a polyester resin which is the reaction product of at least one polybasic acid and at least one polyhydric alcohol and a curing agent comprising a polyanhydride of the formula <FORM:1032372/C3/1> where R is an unsubstituted aromatic or saturated aliphatic hydrocarbon radical, an organosilicon radical or a divalent metal atom, each A is -O- or -NH-, each R1 is a radical derived from benzene or a saturated aliphatic hydrocarbon radical, to two adjacent atoms of which the anhydride radical is attached, and n is an integer of at least 2. The polyester may be derived from, as acids isophthalic and terephthalic acids, and as alcohols ethylene glycol, glycerol, butanediol, pentanediols, neopentyl glycol, 1,1,1-trimethylolethane, trimethylolpropane, sorbitol, mannitol, diglycerol, and dipentaerythritol. The curing agent may be derived from trimellitic acid, 1,2,4-naphthalenetricarboxylic acid, 1,4,8-naphthalenetricarboxylic acid, 1,2,4-butanetricarboxylic acid, 1,2,3-benzenetricarboxylic acid, 1,2,3-propanetricarboxylic acid and 2,3,6-napthalenetricarboxylic acid and their anhydrides, and from polyhydric phenols, polyhydric alcohols, polyamines, Fe, Cu, Zn and alkaline earth metals. In the examples an ethylene glycol-glycerol terephthalate containing TiO2 and fume silica is cured with: hydroquinone bistrimallitate anhydride, neopentyl glycol bistrimellitate anhydride, bisphenol-A bistrimellitate anhydride, pentaerythritol tetrabistrimellitate anhydride, glycerol tristrimellitate anhydride, p1-phenylene bistrimellitamide anhydride, cupric bistrimellitate anhydride, zinc bistrimellitate anhydride and ethylene glycol bistrimellitate anhydride.
