Abstract

A composition for producing acid-removable coatings comprises 50-99% of a liquid carrier and 1-50% of a solid dispersed therein consisting of a copolymer and a wax, a resin or a plasticizer, more than 50% of the solid being a copolymer containing AxByCz units in which A is a monomer which when polymerized gives rise to a polymer of the hardness of polymethyl methacrylate, B is a monomer which when polymerized gives rise to a polymer of the hardness of polyethyl acrylate or poly-2-ethylhexylacrylate, and C is a basic amino nitrogen-containing monomer, x being 25-85%, y 10-50% and z 5-25%, x+y+z equalling 100%. Preferred basic monomers are aminoalkyl acrylates and methacrylates, but there may also be used aminoalkyl substituted styrene, acrylamide and vinyl ethers, vinyl pyridines and diallylamine. The examples describe compositions based on aqueous dispersions of copolymers of (a) methyl methacrylate, ethyl acrylate tertiary butylaminoethyl methacrylate, (b) methyl methacrylate, ethyl acrylate and dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate, (c) methyl methacrylate, ethyl acrylate, and diethylaminoethyl methacrylate, (d) methyl methacrylate, ethyl acrylate and di-n-butylaminoethyl acrylate, and (e) styrene, 2-ethylhexyl acrylate and vinyl pyridine or an alkylaminoalkyl methacrylate. Other specified ingredients of the compositions are polyethylene emulsion, a modified phenolic resin, tributoxyethyl phosphate, a polyoxyethylated nonyl phenol, oleic acid, diethyleneglycol monoethyl ether, formaldehyde morpholine, and an amine-modified polyurethane prepared as described in Specification 918,495.ALSO:Surfaces e.g. those of vinyl tiles, are provided with acid-removable coatings by applying thereto compositions comprising 50-99% of a liquid carrier and 1-50% of a solid dispersed therein consisting of a copolymer and a wax, a resin or a plasticizer, more than 50% of the solid being a copolymer containing Ax By Cz units in which A is a monomer which when polymerized gives rise to a polymer of the hardness of polymethyl methacrylate, B is a monomer which when polymerized gives rise to a polymer of the hardness of polyethyl acrylate or poly 2-ethylhexyl acrylate, and C is a basic amino nitrogen-containing monomer. The examples describe coating substrates with aqueous dispersions of copolymers of methyl methacrylate, ethyl acrylate and dimethylaminoethyl, diethylaminoethyl, tertiary butylaminoethyl or di-u-butylaminoeltryl methacrylate, and copolymers of styrene, 2-ethylhexyl acrylate and vinyl pyridine or alkylaminoalkyl methacrylates. Other specified ingredients of the compositions are polyethylene emulsion, a modified phenolic resin, tributoxyethyl phosphate, a polyoxyethylated nonyl phenol, oleic acid, diethylene gycol monoethyl ether, formaldehyde, morpholine and an amine modified polyurethane prepared as described in Specification 918,495.
