Abstract

Linear polyester or copolyester fibres having substantivity towards acid dyestuffs are produced by melt-spinning the polymer to form a filament and applying to the polyester stream after it emerges from the spinneret orifice, and before its temperature has fallen below the melting point, a basic additive in liquid form. The additive may be a polyamine containing at least two -NH groups or a tertiary amine. The polyester or copolyester prior to being melt-spun may contain a compound capable of reacting with the additive, or the solidified filament, may be treated with the compound, e.g. immediately prior to cold drawing. The compound may be a mono- or polyfunctional acylating or alkylating agent, a mono- or polyisocyanate or a compound capable of forming with a tertiary amine a quaternary ammonium salt. The polyester may be poly (ethylene terephthalate). The additives used in the examples include N-methyl-diethanolamine dibenzoate, a 10% solution of cetyl-dimethylamine in methanol, a 10% solution of diphenylamine in methanol and diethylaminoethyl nicotinate.
