Abstract

Metal-pyridines interaction products are prepared by the interaction of an alkali metal, Mg, Al or mixture thereof with pyridine or an alkyl pyridine or mixture thereof wherein the interacting mixture is maintained so that its specific conductivity is at least 200 microhmo. The interaction may be initiated, preferably rapidly, in known manner, during which initiation the specific conductivity varies considerably, and said initiation should be completed prior to control of the interaction by maintaining the specific conductivity at at least 200 microhmo. The conductivity is preferably measured by a pair of electrodes, preferably Pt. electrodes, inserted inside the interaction vessel and dipping into the bulk of the interaction mixture. Maintenance of the specified specific conductivity may be effected by regulation of temperature, rate of addition of further reactants as diluents or addition of initiator and agitation of the interaction to ensure a uniform mixture. The products of the invention may be converted into bipyridyls by known methods.
