[Also in Division B5] A felt for use in paper-making comprises an interwoven two ply base fabric, Fig. 4, the lower ply of which has relatively large diameter warp and weft yarns 18,21,23 interwoven in open weave construction and the upper ply of which has relatively small diameter warp and weft yarns 17,19, 20,22 interwoven in close weave construction, and a layer of water absorbent fibres 26, Fig. 2, which is mechanically needled to the surface of the base fabric. The lower ply yarns may comprise continuous filaments or staple fibres of nylon or polyester, e.g. polyethylene terephthalate. The yarns preferably have a high degree of twist and are woven in a plain, open weave. The upper ply yarns are made from wool or a mixture of wool with nylon or polyester, e.g. polyethylene terephthalate, fibres. The two plies are preferably woven simultaneously and interwoven so as to lock the two plies together. As shown, the first five weft yarns of a twelve weft yarn pattern are interwoven across the upper and lower warp yarns in the following order: yarn 17, yarn 18, yarn 19, yarn 20 and yarn 21. The yarns 17,19,20 are interwoven with the yarns 22 in a four end sateen order and the yarns 18,21 are interwoven with the yarns 23 in plain weave and are also interwoven with the yarns 22 to form a self-stitched two ply fabric. The fibrous layer 26 is composed of wool or a mixture of wool with nylon or polyester, e.g. polyethylene terephthalate, fibres.
