Abstract

1,030,083. Shoots and hoppers. ANCHOR HOCKING GLASS CORPORATION. Oct. 7, 1964 [Oct. 7, 1963]. No. 40973/64. Heading B8S. A mechanism for handling closure caps 1 Fig. 1, having a cover portion 2 and a skirt 3. Fig. 8, comprises a hopper 5 which feeds the caps through a shoot 7 to a star-wheel 6 rotated by the caps and having pockets 11 to receive the caps, permanent magnets 12 being provided in the pockets 11 to overlie the caps so as to attract and raise those which are improperly positioned, with their cover portion 2 facing downwards, the raised caps being engaged by a cam 13, upon further rotation of the wheel 6, which inverts them to their correct position. The rear edge of each magnet 12 is bevelled at 12a to facilitate movement of the caps thereover. An auxiliary magnet 50, Figs. 1 and 7, helps the magnets 12 to raise the caps. From the wheel 6 the caps pass through shoots 8 and 9 to a sealing machine (not shown). The star-wheel 6 is replaceable by other star-wheels of different sizes to accommodate caps of different sizes and for this purpose the widths of the shoots 7 and 8 are made variable by providing these with adjustable side walls 20, 21, respectively; the side wall 20 of the shoot 7 is secured by screws 26, 27 which are selectively engaged through openings 24, 25 in the wall 20, and the side wall 21 of the shoot 8 is similarly secured by screws 35, 36. The shoot 9 has a side opening 41 leading back into the hopper 5, a magnetic cam 40 being disposed opposite the opening 41 for urging the caps away from the opening 41 and into the shoot 9; when the latter is full, the caps are pushed away from the cam 40 and through the opening 41. The star-wheel 6 is braked by a friction brake 45, Fig. 7, having frictionally engaging members 46, 47. In an alternative embodiment, Figs. 10 and 12 (not shown), the star-wheel 6 is braked by a friction spring extending from the shoot 7 and bearing on the top of the star-wheel 6. A plurality of magnets are mounted beneath the shoot 8 for retarding movement of the caps so as to further brake the star-wheel 6.
