Abstract
<PICT:1030051/C6-C7/1> Adiponitrile is made electrolytically by hydrodimensing acrylonitrile in a 2-compartment cell formed by a permeable diaphragm; the anolyte containing an acid e.g. dilute H2SO4, and the catholyte consisting of acrylonitrile and a salt preferably a quaternary ammonium sulphonate. The permeable diaphragm is preferably cationic and the normality of the acid anolyte is matched with current-density so that hydrogen ions passing through the diaphragm neutralise the OH ions generated at the cathode e.g. .4 to 1.2N acid at C.D. 15 to 40 A.S.Dm. of cathode area. The pH value is thus maintained at 7 to 9.5. A large range of suitable salts are given including mono-, di-, and tri-alkylamine or alkanolamine salts, piperidine, pyrolidine, and morpholine salts of aryl sulphonic acids. Phosphonium and sulphonium salts are also referred to. An apparatus is described in which anolyte and catholyte are circulated on each side of a cationic diaphragm, using electrodes of Pb or alloys, Pt, Ti, or Hg, to which 5 to 20 V is applied, and A.C. may be imposed on the D.C.
