Abstract

Needle selection is achieved on a circular machine by the provision of presser members 8 which are depressed to urge the outwardly sprung shanks of needle jacks 5 inwardly whereby the butts 6 of the latter avoid raising cams 7, Fig. 5 (not shown). The uninfluenced jacks are accordingly raised and needle selection achieved. The presser members 8 are each provided with a single operating butt 9, and selection is made by raising or lowering the jack to bring its butt into alignment with the peripheral surface of one of a bank of selector discs 10, Fig. 1 (not shown). For this purpose, prior to the needle selecting stage a cam 16 or 17 engages one of a number of butts 15 on each presser member and raises or lowers the presser so that its butt registers with one of the discs 10 to select or otherwise the needle. The butts 15 on the presser members are so positioned and the cams 16, 17 actuated to cause various selections to be made such for example as the jack butts being aligned with alternate discs as the presser members are raised and with intermediate discs as the presser members are lowered. The discs are rotated in timed relation to and by being coupled to the needle cylinder and the cams 16 and 19 are inserted by lever control mechanism 32, 33 actuated by a pattern band 31.
