Abstract

1,029,307. Tunnels; tunnelling-shields. M. F. KEMPER. Nov. 19, 1962, No. 43691/62. Heading E1F. In a method of forming a tunnel, a shield is driven into the earth, earth is removed from the interior of the shield, a structure is built up within the shield, and the shield is again driven into the earth to leave the structure supporting the overlying earth. The shield 5 has a beam N adapted run over the top of a support A, and an auxiliary support B pivoted to the beam at 8. The shield resting on the support A is advanced from the position shown in Fig. 1 to that shown in Fig. 2 by hydraulic rams 38-43 carried by the shield and bearing against the tunnel lining already erected, the earth face being supported by boards 49, 50, 51 pressed by pneumatic rams 44-47 during the advance. The rams 38-43 are normally each supplied with an equal volume of liquid, but if it is required to check deviation of the tunnel additional volumes of liquid are supplied to selected rams. After the earth has been dug from the shield and the rams 38-43 have been collapsed an arch C is erected in two parts 50, 51 within the shield, and the arch is connected to the existing lining by tie bolts 62, spacers 63 and lagging 57. The arch is then jacked-up by jacks 53, 54 and supported on chocks 60, 60a. The support B is lowered to the position shown in Fig. 2 and is jacked-up to relieve the load on the support A which is then moved by rams 23 to a position similar to that shown in Fig. 1. The support A is jacked up and the support B is pulled up by an air motor 37 so that another cycle of digging and erection may commence.
