Abstract

Copolyesters are made by reacting a mixture of (a) terephthalic acid or an ester-forming derivative thereof, (b) ethylene glycol, and (c) neopentyl glycol; the proportions of the two glycols being such that the copolyester contains 86 to 15% of ethylene teraphthalate units and 14 to 85% of neopentyl terephthalate units. Polyesterification may be effected in the presence of the usual catalysts and flatling agents (e.g. porous silica). In examples, the ester-forming derivative of terephthalic acid used was dimethyl terephthalate. Some of the copolyesters are soluble in toluene, xylene, methyl ethyl ketone, dioxane, cyclohexanone, acetophenone tetrohydrofuran chloroform ethylene dichloride and 2-nitropropane. The polyesters are useful in the manufacture of films, fibres, ribbons and laminates (see Division B5). Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 915,779.
