Abstract

The invention comprises water-soluble azo dyes of the formula <FORM:1029036/C4-C5/1> wherein A represents the radical of a coupling component, R an aliphatic, araliphatic or aromatic radical which may be substituted, X an alkyl or cycloalkyl radical and in which the group X-O-stands in the 4- or 5-position and the nucleus Q may additionally contain a nucleophilic substituent, e.g. an alkyl radical containing 1 to 5 carbon atoms and a process for the preparation thereof which consists in reacting 1 mole of a water-soluble azo dye of the formula <FORM:1029036/C4-C5/2> wherein A, X and Q have the above meanings or 1 mole of a diazo component of the formula <FORM:1029036/C4-C5/3> wherein X and Q have the above meanings (a) with at least 1 mole of a compound of the formula R-CO-NH-CH2-OH where R has the meaning given above or (b) with at least 1 mole of a compound of the formula R-Z where R has the above meaning and Z represents a -CN or -CONH2 radical and at least 0.5 mole of a symmetrical dihalogenodimethyl ether, in the presence of an acid condensing agent, upon which the reaction product, when a diazo component of the third formula above is used, is diazotized and coupled with a coupling component. The radical R may contain a reactive halogen atom or a multiple linkage which can be split to form addition compounds. The dyes are suitable for dyeing leather, wool, silk and synthetic polyamide fibres, e.g. nylon, whilst those dyes which contain reactive halogen atoms or saponifiable sulphuric or sulphonic acid esters are suitable for dyeing, padding and printing cellulosic fibres and fibres of regenerated cellulose. In an example 1 - amino - 4 - methoxy - 5(chloro - acetylamino-methyl) - benzene - 2 - sulphonic acid is diazotized and coupled with 1-(21,51-dichlorophenyl) - 3 - methyl - 5 - pyrazolone - 41 -sulphonic acid to obtain a yellow dye. Many additional products are defined.ALSO:1 - Amino - 4 - methoxy - 5 - (chloro-acetyl-aminomethyl) - benzene - 2 - sulphonic acid is obtained by reacting 1-amino-4-methoxybenzene-2-sulphonic acid with chloracetamide and dichlorodimethyl ether in sulphuric acid solution.
