Abstract
Alkali metal and/or alkaline earth metal nitriles are removed from aqueous solutions, particularly industrial waste solutions, by adding to the solution in the presence of excess acid ions a decontaminating agent consisting of (a) sufficient mineral acid to convert the total metallic nitrite to nitrous acid and (b) sufficient of compound RNH2, where R is H or an organic radical, to convert all the nitrous acid to free nitrogen, or consisting of a salt of the reaction (a) with (b), the pH of the solution being used as a retro-active control of the supply of the decontaminating agent; the latter may be ammonium chloride or preferably hydrochloric acid plus urea, which mixture when used in a ratio 2: 1 to 3: 1 provides also the required excess acid ions. The reaction produces nitrogen, and a nitrite-free solution which may be discarded into public drainage.
