Abstract

1,028,075. Cathode-ray tubes. RADIO CORPORATION OF AMERICA. April 2, 1964 [April 12, 1963], No. 13685/64. Heading H1D. A tensioned metal strap is applied around a cathode-ray tube, to render it implosion resistant, by heating the strap, wrapping it around the tube and lapping the ends over one another, mechanically tensioning the strap, welding the ends together, and allowing the continuous band produced thereby to cool. Zinc-coated carbon steel strap 20 is heated, e.g. by the passage of current therethrough, and wrapped around the bulb 11 over a pair of semi-encircling metal rim plates 22 contoured to the shape of the bulb, the ends of the strap overlapping over a pair of adjacent welding electrodes. The strap is mechanically tensioned, and its ends welded together by clamping against them a shorting block opposite the electrodes, whereafter the latter are forced from underneath the strap, which snaps back against the plates 22 and thereafter cools (Fig. 3, not shown). Fibreglass cloth may be bonded to the funnel 15 by epoxy resin, the high voltage terminal 32 being exposed through an aperture in the cloth.
