Abstract

1,028,062. Drying granular materials. METALLGESELLSCHAFT A.G. April 2, 1963 [April 5, 1962], No. 13078/63. Heading F4G. In a method of drying moist granular material which temporarily become sticky or plastic in a temperature region which must be exceeded for drying the material by exposure to a hot gas, the material is fed in batches into a fluidized bed drier 1 without a grate for preliminary drying and then passes for complete drying and temporary storage into a shaft drier 2 mounted therebelow in which the material is maintained in a free-flowing state by a counter current of drying gas. A device 17 monitors the level of material in the drier 2 to operate a relay 18 to transmit an electrical pulse to a sequence control unit 19 of the drier 1 causing a discharge gate 15 to open to charge the drier 2 with predried material, to interrupt the flow of gas to the drier 1 and to charge the drier 1 through a metering trap 8. Timing devices are incorporated in the unit 19 to control automatically the drying time of the feed in the drier 1. Each drier has an independent, heated gas circulating system.
