Abstract

<PICT:1027929/C6-C7/1> A fused electrolyte cell for refining aluminium comprises a refractory masonry bath 70 fitted with a vault comprising an apertured stationary portion 74 integral with the walls of the bath and a movable portion 83 arranged to obturate the aperture, an anodic sole plate 72 at the bath bottom in contact with the alloy to be refined 75 and having at least one current lead 78 extending through the bath, and at least one cathode 73 in contact with the refined metal 77 and having at least one current lead 79 leading from the or each cathode through the vault. The or each cathode and its respective lead may be secured either to the stationary portion 74 (see Fig. 2, not shown) or to the movable portion 83 (as shown).
