Abstract

A continuous, bright gold film is applied to a surface, e.g. of borosilicate glass, plastic, ceramic, Ag, Cu, Fe, or anodised or lacquer coated Mg or Al, by contacting it with an aqueous solution containing a gold salt, such as the chloride or bromide or sodium gold thiosulphate, and gold complexer, such as an alkali metal or ammonium carbonate or hydroxide and/or an aliphatic amine containing 1 to 8C and 1 to 5N atoms, and with another aqueous solution containing hydrazine (as reducing agent), the solutions becoming mixed at the surface. The gold solution is made by dissolving the gold salt e.g. the chloride or bromide in water and neutralising with a base such as NaOH, adding the complexer e.g. ethylenediamine or diethylenetriamine to water and neutralising with an acid such as HCl or HBr, and mixing the two solutions to obtain a solution containing more than 10-3 mol/l of gold salt and not more than 10-16 g/l of free aquo-coordinated gold ions. The reducing solution may contain 0.1-6 mol/l of hydrazine and 0-2mol/l of an alkali metal hydroxide such as KOH. The gold and reducing solutions may be simultaneously sprayed on to the surface, e.g. using atomizers employing air or fluoro-or hydro-carbons, or flowed over, or the surface may be immersed in the gold solution to which is then added the reducing solution.
