Abstract
Alkali metal silicate glass is strengthened by contacting it at a temperature below the strain point with the salt of an alkali metal having a larger atomic diameter than an alkali metal in the glass and maintaining the hydroxyl content of the salt below 0.0015%, and preferably below 0.001% by weight. The control of the alkalinity is effected by periodically bubbling an acid gas such as sulphur dioxide or nitrogen dioxide through the molten salt. The glass is a soda-lime-silica glass and the salt may be a potassium salt, preferably the nitrate; rubidium or caesium salts can be used instead of or subsequently to potassium salts. The temperature of treatment is at least 870 DEG F. and preferably between 875 DEG F. and 10 DEG F. below the strain point, and the treatment is carried on for 5-40 minutes.
