Abstract
1,026,458. Propelling aircraft. BRISTOL SIDDELEY ENGINES Ltd. March 22, 1965 [March 23, 1964], No. 12212/64. Headings B7G and B7W. [Also in Division F1] Gas turbine engines 12, 13 are each connected via a reduction gear-box 14 at the rear of the engine to a shaft 15 extending forwards and connected to a common reduction gear-box 35 via a flexible drive 36 and a freewheel 37. The output from the gear-box 35 is taken through bevel gearing 38 to a vertical shaft driving a helicopter rotor. The freewheels 37 allow one engine to drive the helicopter rotor while the other engine is inoperative. Auxiliary power may be taken from the common reduction gear-box through step-up gearing. In a modification, the flexible drives 36 are omitted, and the shafts 15 are connected through freewheels and spur gearing to a common horizontal shaft connected through a flexible drive and a common reduction gearbox employing bevel gears to the vertical output shaft. In a further embodiment, the output shaft is horizontal and drives an aircraft propeller.
