Abstract
1,026,071. Determination of dissolved gases in water. CENTRAL ELECTRICITY GENERATING BOARD, E. C. POTTER and G. E. EVERITT. May 14,1962 [May 12,1961], No. 174 56/61. Heading B1X. Gases dissolved in impure water are determined by contacting the water with one side of a thin membrane of polymeric material through which gas diffuses into pure water in contact with the other side until equilibrium has been reached. The dissolved gas in the pure solution can be determined. The method can be carried out in vessel 50 having a hollow plug 54 provided with a four way cock 52. A sack of thin polythene 62 is connected to an extension 61 of the plug 54 which is open to the interior of the sack. The determination of oxygen in water is carried out by filling the sack with pure water through tube 56 and an aperture 55 in the surface of the plug. Water to be tested is passed through the vessel outside the sack; the water entering through tube 56 and a groove 63 in the surface of the plug extending from the level of tube 56 to below the socket wall, and the water leaving by tap 51. Tube 56 is then washed and filled with test-reagent by passing test-reagent through tube 56 and a tube 59 leading out through the top of the plug. A known quantity of test reagent as determined by a calibration mark 57 is then introduced into the sack. The apparatus can also be in the form of two co-axial tubes of thin polymeric material is claimed in Specification 1, 026, 072. An apparatus is also described comprising a multiplicity of units separated by thin sheets of polymeric material, stacked in columns and with alternate units connected together in series, the water to be tested flowing through one series and pure water flowing through the other series. The membranes may consist of polythene natural or synthetic e.g. silicone rubber, and polytetrafluoroethylene.
