Abstract

Compounds of the general formula <FORM:1025914/C2/1> where R is hydrogen or methyl and n1, n2, n3, n4, n5, n6, n7 and n8 are zero or whole numbers from 1 to 8, their sums being in the range of 2 to 18, are formed by reacting sucrose with propylene oxide and ethylene oxide.ALSO:A polyurethane foam of low and relatively stable thermal conductivity comprises the polyurethane resin of the said foam having dispersed therein a thermoplastic polymer of an ethylenically unsaturated halide, the cells of said foam containing a vapour of a chlorofluorocarbon. A vinylidene halide, particularly vinylidene chloride, and an interpolymer of vinylidene chloride and acrylonitrile are specified as unsaturated halides. The polyurethane foam is prepared by mixing an organic polyol, an organic compound containing a plurality of isocyanato groups per molecule, a chlorofluorocarbon, and either a polymer of an ethylenically unsaturated halide or monomeric components and an addition catalyst for forming the polymer, and subjecting the mixture to reaction conditions to polymerize any monomeric components present and to form a foamed and cured product. The polyol specified is the reaction product of 1 mole sucrose, 11 moles propylene oxide and 4 moles ethylene oxide.
