Abstract
Polymers of alpha-olefines are made by feeding an alpha-olefin in the gaseous state into a body of alpha-olefin maintained under pressure in the liquid state and containing in suspension a catalyst formed by the reaction of a higher halide of a metal of Group IV(a), V(a), or VI of the Periodic Table, with a compound of Al, or a compound of a metal of Group I(a) or II, the feed of gaseous olefin being in such quantity as to maintain the catalyst in suspension and constituting the sole source of olefin monomer added to the liquid alpha-olefin, and withdrawing gaseous olefin from the reaction zone so as to maintain the reaction temperature substantially constant. The preferred olefins are propylene and butene-1. The preferred catalyst is TiCl3 or TiCl3 co-crystallized with AlCl3, and diethyl aluminium monochloride with or without aluminium triethyl. The Specification includes flow diagrams of apparatus suitable for effecting the polymerization in a continuous manner, and also recovering the polymer.
