1,025,324. Laminates and laminating. C. O. A. EKMAN, E. V. EKMAN, and B. BRUNDIN, [trading as FIRMA LICENTIA, EKMAN & BRUNDIN]. Oct. 9, 1962 [Oct. 12, 1961], No. 38187/62. Heading B5N. A laminate comprising a central fabric or other reinforcing layer, preferably a net material, having a layer of plastics material on each side is made by coating webs 1, 2, e.g. of viscose fabric, with a layer of softened thermoplastic material 7 such as polyvinyl chloride, as by doctor blades 5, 6, passing the coated webs 8, 9 through heating chambers 18, 19 having arcuate surfaces to gelatinize the coating, and then passing the webs, on either side of the central web 12, through pressure rollers 14, 15 to fuse the coatings together through the fabric. The laminate so produced may be led around a cooling roller 25 and wound up at 26. The carrier webs may be subsequently stripped off. The rollers 14, 15 are covered with heat-resistant rubber, are cooled by contacting rollers 16, 17, and are pressed together by hydraulic means 30. To provide for the treatment of materials of different characteristics under different pressures, duplicate pressure means 14a, 15a, mounted on the same slidable frame may be provided. The heating means 18, 19 comprises upper and lower chambers which may contain electrically heated liquid and which in the lower portions of the lower chambers may have grooves for withdrawal of vapours.
