Abstract

1,025,133. Pipe coupling. POLYSIUS G.m.b.H. Jan. 13, 1965 [Feb. 10, 1904], No. 1456/65. Heading F2G. A rotary pipe joint for the selective coupling of an incoming pipe with one of several outgoing pipes, has a rotary body carrying a coupling pipe, the body carrying means for sealing all the outgoing pipes to which the coupling pipe is not connected, a spring element, disposed in the region of an extension of the rotary body lying coaxial with the axis of rotation of the body and transmitting force through the body to seal the necessary outgoing pipes. In one embodiment the coupling pipe 3 is carried within a conical rotary body 5 fitting within a housing 6, an extension 5a of the body being rotatably mounted in a bearing bush 6a, spring elements 8 being disposed between the body and the housing. The housing 6 receives an incoming pipe and several outgoing pipes 2 a seal between the body and pipes 2 being formed by elements 9a, 9b compressed by means of force transmitted from the spring elements 8 through the body 5. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 1, the body 5 carries a cylinder receiving a piston head 7a connected by a hollow stem 7 axially fixed to the housing. The housing also carries a motor 13 and means such as a Maltese Cross drive 14 for effecting intermittent rotary motion. Pressure fluid is introduced into the cylinder via the hollow stem during rotation, whereby the body 5 is forced away from the output pipes to release the pressure on seal elements 9a, 9b. In a second embodiment, Fig. 2 (not shown), the piston and cylinder are replaced by a threaded rod with one end axially fixed to the body and the other end axially fixed to the housing such that on rotating the rod the body is forced away from the housing to release the pressure on the seals, so that the body can then be indexed one position. Grooves in the rod and a stop pin can be used to select the required positions.
