A washing machine has a vertically reciprocable agitator 48 comprising two frusto-conical clothes agitator rings 80, 82 and one frusto-conical pump ring 72, vents being provided connecting the spaces between the rings to the atmosphere to relieve the pressure created in the spaces by the downstroke of the agitator. Tub 34 is mounted on a spin shaft 60 through which passes agitator shaft 62, water and oil seal bellows 64 and 63 being provided round the top of shaft 62. Agitator 48, whose lower position is shown in chain dotted lines 66, comprises a cylindrical column 68 with a partition 70 and, between rings 72, 80 and 82, slots 96, 98 and 100,102. An adjustable liner 107 with slots matching those in column 68 is provided to control the size of the vents. Ring 72 may be of sheet metal, neoprene or urethane plastic. During the downstroke of the agitator, circulation is as shown by arrows 83. In a modification, Fig. 6 (not shown), pump ring 272 is made of neoprene with metal reinforcements, ring 280 is formed integrally with agitator column 268 incorporating housing 275 and ring 282 is moulded from polypropylene or a heat resistant co-polymer of a styrene-acrylonitrile resin with a butadiene-acrylonitrile resin. Ring 282 has strengthening ribs 290 with terminal portions 292 which engage slots 300 in the housing 275 which forms a detergent and bleach dispensing chamber 296 with vents 298 leading into tub 34. Ring 280 is provided with vents 308 opening to the atmosphere.
