Abstract

The subject-matter of this Specification is similar to that described in Specification 1,023,491, differing only in the following details: part at least of the heat for reheating the heat-carrying bodies is provided by fine gases with or without hot spent solids ash produced by combusting part at least of the hot spent solids from the pyrolysis zone in a gas-lift zone, the gas velocity in the lift zone being such as to prevent the formation of fluidized bed conditions, i.e. it is sufficient to move the coarser spent solids particles through the lift zone. The particles may be entrained in a combustion supporting gas, e.g. air at 1000 DEG to 1200 DEG F., for lifting through the zone, or in a non-combustion-supporting gas, oxygen being added to the entrained particles. A supplemental fuel, e.g. effluent vapour from the pyrolysis zone, natural gas or other solid, liquid or gaseous fuel may be burnt in the lift zone. The pyrolysis zone may be a fluidized bed, a rotating drum, or a vertical stacked solids bed.
