Abstract

A polyamide is made by polymerizing a lactam in the presence of an anionic catalyst and phenyl - ethoxy - methylimino methane. Specified lactams are e -caprolactam, oenantholactam, valerolactam, butyrolactam, a -methyl-e -caprolactam, caprylolactam, laurolactam and mixtures thereof. Specified catalysts are the alkali and alkaline earth metals and hydrides, oxides, hydroxides and carbonates thereof, Grignard compounds and metal-alkyls. Fillers, e.g. wood meal, carborundum, carbon black, powdered slate, fine coal and coke breeze; polystyrene, polyformaldehyde, polypropylene, polyethylene or polyamides may be present in the reaction mixtures.
