Abstract
A slow-release urea-containing fertilizer composition, impregnated or coated with a solid hydrocarbon, contains formaldehyde to prevent decomposition of the urea in the soil. The formaldehyde may be in the form of formalin or paraformaldehyde. 0.01-10.0% thereof based on the urea may be present. The urea may be in the form of phosphate, nitrate, or oxalate; or a complex with ammonium chloride or calcium nitrate. The hydrocarbon may be in the form of wax, asphalt, steam-cracked resin, poly-vinyl resin, polyethylene, polypropylene, or a mixture of 5-50% of wax and 95-50% of asphalt. 0.1-25% thereof based on the total composition may be employed. It may be employed molten or dissolved in a volatile solvent. The composition may also contain chalk, limestone, calcined lime, gypsum, clay, or phosphate rock. A composition containing hydrocarbon may be formed into agglomerates or extruded pellets. Small pellets may first be formed and then formed into larger pellets by addition of further hydrocarbon, optionally together with further fertilizer. Pellets may have a diameter of 0.05-2 inches.
