Abstract

[Also in Division B5] A buff comprises a circumferential series of cloth strips or leaves 7 extending outwardly from a core 5 at least externally of plastics material and having a central longitudinal bore 6 to receive a driving spindle, the inner part of each of the strips or leaves having therein a row of holes 9 and being embedded in the core with the holes penetrated by the plastics material. The strips may be of abrasive cloth and may be assembled in sets each of which comprises six sheets formed by doubling over three doublesized sheets, the set then having the holes formed therein and being secured together by staples disposed a little outwardly of the holes. Separators may be interleaved with the strips stopping short of the holes and the strips may be arranged radially in a drum-like mould. A metal core having its bore plugged, or a former for the bore of the buff, is placed in the mould and resin, such as cold-setting or thermosetting resin, e.g. phenol-formaldehyde polyester, is poured into the mould about the core or former to permeate the inner parts of the strips and penetrate the holes. When the buff is removed from the mould, the separators are withdrawn from between the strips. For largesize buffs, wire may be threaded through the holes and be embedded in the plastics material. The strips may be arranged axially or helically of the buff.
