Abstract

A process for the preparation of boric acid comprises electrolysing an aqueous solution of a salt of boric acid (e.g. an alkali metal or ammonium salt such as Na2O.2B2O3 or one of its hydrates) contained in a compartment of an electrolytic cell separated from the cathode of the cell by a cationic permselective membrane and from the anode of the cell by an anionic permselective membrane, whereby the cations of the salt of boric acid are caused to migrate into the cathode compartment which contains an aqueous solution of an hydroxide (e.g. NaOH), and the borate ions of the salt of boric acid are caused to migrate into the anode compartment of the cell which contains an aqueous electrolyte (e.g. a small quantity of H2SO4 or Na2SO4), boric acid subsequently being separated from the contents of the anode compartment (e.g. by crystallization, distillation or solvent extraction). The central compartment may contain either a mixed cationic/anionic or an anionic or cationic ion exchange resin. The cathode may be of stainless steel and the anode of Pt, platinized Ti, a Pt-containing alloy, C or Pb. Working temperatures between ambient and 50 DEG C. may be used. The process may be operated continuously.
