Abstract

1,022,171. Slow-release medicinal tablets. WELLCOME FOUNDATION Ltd. May 31, 1962 [June 15, 1961], No. 21593/61. Heading A5B. A prolonged release medicinal tablet comprises a medicated portion and a non-medicated inert portion which is physiologically acceptable, substantially insoluble, indigestible and unabsorbable in the fluids of the gastro-intestinal tract of man, and substantially impermeable to the medicament, said inert portion covering part but not all of the surface of the medicated portion. Suitable inert materials are sublimed sulphur, bone phosphate, barium sulphate, calcium silicate, aluminium silicate, or a mixture thereof; preferably the inert material is in admixture with a "plastic" such as polyvinyl acetate, a natural resin such as colophony, a wax such as beeswax, paraffin wax or hydrogenated castor oil, or a mixture thereof. The inorganic substances comprise 20- 99 per cent by weight of the inert portion and the "plastic" and wax respectively from 0 to 10% and from 15 to 18% wt. The inert portion is compressed on to a preformed medicated core by a compression coating technique. Not more than 50% of the surface area of the medicated portion is exposed. As shown in Figures I and II, a tablet consists of an inert portion 2 surrounding the medicated portion 1 and is provided with a hole 3 extending into the medicated portion 1.
