Abstract

1,022,035. Treating polyester filaments. MONSANTO CO. June 10, 1964 [June 17, 1963], No. 24165/64. Heading B5B. Molecular orientation is imparted to polyester filaments by impregnating the undrawn filaments with an aqueous emulsion of a cationic surface-active quaternary ammonium compound, and then stretching the impregnated filaments. The emulsion may contain up to 20% solids. The preferred compounds have formula where R is an alkyl radical having more than 10 carbon atoms and R 1 is an alkyl radical having less than 5 carbon atoms. Several such compounds are specified. The polyesters treated are those formed from decarboxylic acids and glycols, and copolyesters or modifications of these polyesters and copolyesters. Many polymers are specified. The emulsion may be applied to the filaments from a roll dipping into a bath of emulsion, or by use of a wick or split roll, or by passing the filaments through a bath containing the emulsion. The amount of " solids," i.e. the totality of ingredients of the emulsion exclusive of the aqueous medium, deposited on the filaments is preferably 0À1- 1À5% by weight of the filaments. In an example, filaments made from polyethylene terephthalate modified with methoxy polyethylene glycol and pentaerythritol are treated with an aqueous emulsion containing 10% of soya dimethyl ethyl ammonium etho-sulphate. The filaments are then hot-drawn.
