Abstract

1,021,864. Seals. LUXEMBOURGEOISE DE BREVETS ET DE PARTICIPATIONS (LUBREPA). March 25, 1963 [April 2, 1962], No. 11750/63. Heading F2B. A sealing ring 1 between coaxial parts A, B, Fig. 1, at least one of which is rotating, is secured to the rotating part, or one of the rotating parts, and has a sealing lip 3 into engagement with the other part, balancing means 4 carried by the ring 1 being operative by centrifugal force to counteract the centrifugal force exerted on the lip as a result of rotation of the ring. As shown, the sealing ring 1 of elastomeric material and having a reinforcement 2 is secured to the rotating part B and has at least one lip 3 into contact with a shaft A. The balancing means consists of an integral annular portion 4 of elastomeric material which under the action of centrifugal force produces a moment about Ao of magnitude equal to, or greater than, that produced by the lip 3 whereby the latter is maintained into contact with the shaft 1. The portion 4 may be provided on its inner periphery with an annular groove in which is located an annular spring which expands under the action of centrifugal force. In a modification, Fig. 3 (not shown), the portion 4 and at least a portion of the lip 3 are reinforced by a frusto-conical member 7, provided with slits 8, Fig. 4 (not shown), the larger base and the smaller top of the frustum respectively expanding and contracting on being rotated. The member 7 may be deformed into an annular groove in the inner peripheral surface of the portion 4 to accommodate an annular spring. In another modification, Fig. 7 (not shown), the portion 4 is formed at its free end with projections 10 in which are embedded metal wire or balls 11. The sealing ring may be mounted on a rotating part A and its sealing lip may be into contact with the part B, in which case the balancing means are suitably mounted to relieve increasing contact pressure between the lip and the part B due to centrifugal force.
