Apparatus for intermittently feeding sheets comprises gripper carriages running in guideways, which are moved between rest or work stations by one or more endless chains, the chains being deflected by rollers out of the direction of feed at the rest stations to temporarily release the gripper carriages. Grippers; sheet carriers and forwarders.- Gripper carriages 6 are provided with wheels 7 running in opposed guide channels 5. Each channel has a depending flange slotted at 8 which co-operates with a roller 52 carried by a continuously moving endless chain 50. The chain passes around four sprockets 54-57 at each rest station whereby the roller 52 temporarily disengages the carriage. Alternatively, a plurality of spaced endless chains are provided, each chain being driven continuously and following a substantially rectangular path, Fig. 6 (not shown). The carriages are moved by means of rollers on the chains engaging the slots 8 and come to rest in the gaps between the chains. They are moved between adjacent chains by a rotating arm. In another embodiment, Fig. 1 (not shown), two continuously moving endless chains 14, 141 follow circuituous paths around sprockets 15-25 and 15<SP>1</SP>-21<SP>1</SP> and 25<SP>1</SP>, respectively. The carriages come to rest at R 1 , R 2 , R 3 where they are transferred from one chain to the other. Registering.-A vertically movable rod 31 is provided at each rest station, which is reciprocated by a cam follower 36 (not shown). The rod 31 carries a double arm 32. A lug 34 at one end of arm 32 engages a recess 33 in the carriage to register it in position at the rest station B.
