Abstract
A furniture polish comprising carnauba wax, turpentine, soap and water, contains as ultra-violet stabilizer alpha-ethyl-4-hydroxybenzylidene malononitrile (Example 10).ALSO:In protecting leather against ultraviolet light the leather is sprayed with an aqueous methyl/butyl acrylate polymer emulsion containing alpha - methyl - 4 - hydroxybenzylidenemalononitrile, pressed and dried.ALSO:Polymeric materials are stabilized against ultra-violet light by 0.1-10 wt. per cent (based on the composition) of a compound of formula <FORM:1020614/C3/1> wherein R1 is hydroxy, alkoxy, aralkoxy or optionally substituted phenyl or phenoxy, R2 is C1- 30 alkyl or alkenyl, X1 is a non-auxochromic substituent (bathochromism below 250 <\>rA) and n is 0-4. In examples, the compound (R1= p-OH, R2=CH3, n=O) is used to stabilize nitrocellulose (1), cellulose acetate (2), a methyl/butyl acrylate emulsion polymer (11), an acrylonitrile-butadiene latex (12, foamed P.V.C. are formed polyurethanes are also mentioned); its o-OH analogue to stabilize a styrene-glyceryl phthalate maleate resin (3); its p-n-dodecyloxy analogue to stabilize a polyethylene (9), while other compounds are also specified for the same applications. Other materials mentioned are regenerated cellulose, epoxys and melamines. Compounds of the above formula having at least one reactive H atom may be reacted with up to 100 moles of e.g. ethylene, propylene, butylene, butylenedi, cyclohexene, butadiene, isobutylene or styrene oxides, glycidol, epichlorohydrin or mixtures thereof. In Examples 17-19, a compound of formula <FORM:1020614/C3/2> and analogous reaction products of substituted benzylidenemalononitriles with various amounts of ethylene and/or propylene oxide, are prepared.ALSO:Compounds of formula <FORM:1020614/C2/1> wherein R1 is hydroxy, alkoxy, aralkoxy or optionally substituted phenyl or phenoxy, R2 is C1-30 alkyl or alkenyl, X1 is a non-autochromic substituent (bathochromium below 250 <\>rA) and n is 0-4, are prepared by reacting with malonitrile the corresponding ring-substituted phenyl alkyl (or alkenyl) ketone; a large number of ketones are specified. An alternative method is to employ cyanacetamide in place of malononitrile and to dehydrate the product with POCl3. Compounds containing at least one reactive hydrogen atom may be polyoxalkylated, e.g. the following is produced from the amide precursor with ethylene oxide. <FORM:1020614/C2/2>ALSO:A compound of formula <FORM:1020614/B1-B2/1> and analogous reaction products of substituted benzylidenemalononitriles with various amounts of ethylene and/or propylene oxide are stated to produce stable oil-in-water emulsions (e.g. 1 : 1 mineral oil-water) (see Example 17).
